Playing at the Big Sandy Music Hall
I have a great passion for music, and enjoy playing my
guitar and singing with my sisters. We have been playing piano for a little
over seven years now, and love to include this in our songs as well. When I play
music, it makes me happy, and I especially love to do this with my sisters.
This year my sisters and I have been busy practicing songs
on our guitars. Sometime around June, my mom, me, and my sisters all went down
to Hawkins. We were slowly growing out of our old, mini Yamaha Guitars, and
were in need of new and bigger guitars. There was an old music store down there
called Action Sound, and we wanted to get Olivia, my sister, a new guitar, and
that is how we found our way in the shop of Kelly Barber.
Mr. Kelly is the owner of Action Sound, and he, and his
friends helped Olivia pick out a very nice Bedell guitar. Sophie and I needed
to get our guitars fixed, so one of Kelly’s friends helped us with that as
well. We also were looking to buy some cases for traveling with our guitars. He
showed us some very nice gig bag cases, and we decided to buy them. Before we
checked out, he asked us to play for him on his guitars. I really didn’t want
to, but my mom told me to. We played for him a song called, I See Fire, by Ed
Sheeran. He LOVED our voices and three-part harmony, and told us to keep up the
good work.
When we finished playing for Mr. Kelly, my mom went to pay.
When she got up to the counter the man told her that Kelly was going to give
her the guitar, the guitar cases, and the work on the guitars as a gift. She could
not believe it! Such a blessing he had given her. Mr. Kelly told us that even
though he was going to give us the cases, the work on our guitars, and the Bedell
for free, we had to make a promise. He wanted us to play our guitar and sing at
the Big Sandy Music Hall! This was a place where famous singers played in front
of hundreds of people. We could not believe it. It was such an honor. Even
though it was so exciting, I didn’t really want to do it. I get nervous when I play
in front of people, and do not enjoy playing at recitals like my sisters, who
do not stage fright as easily.
Well, we made the promise for Mr. Barber and now the time
had come to play at the Big Sandy Music Hall. That day we had gotten all ready,
and right before we left, my mom read a chapter of Little Women to us. Finally,
we were ready and we headed out. When we got to the Music Hall, we took a sound
check, and then had dinner down in the basement. Soon, people started arriving,
and some of our friends and family popped up as well. After, what seemed like a
very long time, we went upstairs, and sat down in the chairs. The women who was
going to announce us went up to the stage. When she was finished, it was time
for us to climb up to the stage. Our songs went very well, and the audience
seemed to love it. When we were finished, we were so relieved, but I’ve got to
say that I had a pretty good time.
For the rest of the night, we listened to my music teacher,
Mrs. Emmylou, and her family play. They sounded AWESOME, and I was very
grateful that we were able to join.
